Without looking anything up...I think he wasn't actually a clown. I think the clown was just a form he took. And I don't remember if he was a space alien, or a demon from hell, etc.
If iI remember correctly, in the book the children go on some kind of vision quest and see a vision of some kind of meteor striking the earth thousands of years in the past. Implication being that It came from outer space.
It's been too long since I read the book or saw the movie. Regardless, it's not a goofy horror movie and can't be on this poll.
