Man, I totally fell behind on that show. Need t'catch up one'a these days.

Also, on last week's episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver said they were taking a two week break... which seems weird because that was the first episode after a two week break. I suppose it's better than going 4 weeks without a new episode.

    How was everyone else's weekend?

I'm off on Monday and Tuesday, so my weekend just started. Plans include going to see that Sherlock Holmes movie with Ian Mckellan at the local indie-theater downtown branch. I'm also gonna drink some beer, slack off and play some vidyagames.

At least it's over and done with.

I ended up going to a funeral of a friend I had known for 40+ years. He was the neighbour to whose house I would spend and hour or so each afternoon having a beer. Due to a mistake on the time I ended up getting there 15 minutes before the funeral was over. I think he would have liked that.  And now I'm just catching up on this weeks episode of The Strain and wondering why there is no Last Week Tonight on sunday.

I'm sorry to hear about that. Hugs for you.

Yesterday's shift at the pizza factory was interesting. When I came in, there was a need for an extra person inside. So instead of waiving the sign for two hours, coming in for a lunch break and then going out for another three hours, I worked inside for two hours, had an hour lunch break, and then went outside. What I do when I clock is, is to get on the clock ten minutes early, so that I can clock out ten minutes early and catch the bus. As I was leaving yesterday, the boss shouts my name and I'm thinking "oh shit, am I in trouble for something?" I walk over and he hands me a dollar and says "You forgot to tip out after working inside."

My boss is totally fucking cool.

    Such disappointment.

This morning I must not have been as alert as I should be when I go grocery shopping. What I thought was Prego marinara sauce that would go really great with the homemade beef meatballs I have been doing on sunday nights was, in fact, "Mini-Meatballs" sauce.

Besides the fact that premade mini meatballs are completely pointless when I already have perfectly good meatballs, this has to be a contender for "product designed for the lazier mutherfuckers imaginable."

What kind of person feels the need to feed their family this tasteless dreck?

I am fundamentally annoyed with myself.

I do have some ginger cider I can drink if it has had time to get cold enough.

On a scale of 1 -10,  how good is LOTL and is it one of those shows that MUST be watched? Like Doctor Who, and Undergrads.

I couldn't dream of grading it like that. It's cheesy-- rubber suit monsters, furry apemen suits, and claymation dinosaurs. The acting is clunky-- It was a Saturday morning show in the 1970s. But the writing is trippy and ambitious for a kid's show. Many episodes were written by science fiction luminaries like larry Niven.

In today's episode, for example, Enik resolves the paradox of how the marshall family entered/did not enter the LOTL. He reveals that if 3 people enter the Land, 3 people must leave. he then sends the Marshalls through the portal-- and dooms the other Marshall family to fall through the portal. It seems that the whole series of events is actually caused by the fact that Enik observed it.

One of us ought to write (and submit for publication) a blog post or essay titled "Ten reasons why longtime readers are unhappy with the changes at Topless Robot that have nothing to do with Misogyny"

    I'll start:

The name Topless Robot reflected the kind of humor found on the site. It was naughty. It was subversive. But in the end it was just a name. We were all in on the joke and even if we had to explain to our boss or an IT department that there was no porn to be found here it was all OK. Now the world has changed and we can no longer have the name because we're afraid we'll be called misogynistic? As Penn and Teller would say-- "that is bullsh*t"

    Speaking of humor...

Where has it gone? I'm not one of those people who bitch that "the site sucks since Rob left." I Like Luke. I was one of the first people who insisted that we should give him the chance to make the site his own without being compared to the editor who'd gone before. I do wish, however, that Luke would invest in some more humorous articles from his contributors. I miss the bad movie FAQ articles. I'm fully aware that copying that would be a borderline case of intellectual property theft, but I still think a stronger attempt to make with the funny is in order.

    Corporate Weenieism

Remember when Luke's corporate weenie bosses invited us all to an open thread where we spitballed ideas to make the site "better"? Remember how they said our community was unique among the Intertubes and they wanted to nurture and encourage that spirit? That all seems pretty patronizing considering how ever since that moment they've done nothing but dismantle the functionality that encouraged our participation.

I get that Livefyre was too expensive. But replacing it with the most generic and glitchy Facebook comments system was the dumbest thing I've ever seen. How can they not see that inviting us to use a platform that mimics the features they deleted only reminds us that we DO NOT NEED their comments sections to communicate with one another. It would be like me telling my customers at Celll Phone Mining Corp, Inc that AT&T also offers some pretty cool iPads and while I'd like to continue being their phone provider, they should probably look for tablet solutions elsewhere.

OK that's three reasons. Someone get me the other seven and we'll submit it it. Hell you can even have the byline and the "paycheck" if the article makes publication

    Nicely said.

Reason 4: My father is colourblind. I am not. When I look at that logo, I envy my father.
Yes.  Reason number 4.  Generic and uninteresting site redesign.  Optimizing everything for mobile devices may de rigeur but it makes for boring page layouts and a kind of pitiful sameness to the site.  Weird anarchic web design can work and does work for a lot of bloggers.  Harry Knowles at AICN is one example.  His site glories in the fact that it's layout hasn't changed substantially.  Matt Drudge is another example.  Love or hate his politics, you have to admit his plain white screen with black headlines works for him.  Changing site layout just because "that's what one does" does not give me confidence.

We need 6 more reasons and we got our article.

I'd say that the logo and the layout could make for separate list items. That would make the count 5.

    Here's some other thoughts:

    6. The community feels less important.

    7. Brand Recognition has been reset back to square one.

    8. The Robot's Voice is a bland and boring name.

She turned up in the store again a couple of days later asking to speak to the technician.  Turns out she had water-damaged the phone (there were water droplets under the camera lens which is a 100% indication that the phone has been submerged at some point.

Her tirade a couple of days earlier was a gambit to get me to take the phone back as a return, maybe rattling me in the process so I wouldn't inspect it carefully and notice the water inside it.

It's the only way any of it makes any sense. Especially because I still don't believe the online price was any cheaper than the price we sold it at.

    Anyway.

This is why having insurance on a smart phone is a good idea.
